Abstract:Pheasant Birdsare large, long-tailed gamebirds. The genus name comes from Latin phasianus, “pheasant”. The males have rich chestnut, golden-brown and black markings on their bodies and tails, with a dark green head and red face wattling. Females are buff coloured with dark brown markings. While pheasants are able to fly fast for short distances, they prefer to run. Pheasants live in any semi-open habitat, sometimes in open grassland but more often in brushy meadows, woodland edges, hedgerows, and farmland with mixed crops. Pheasants can make wonderful pets but they can be particularly aggressive because they have a “harem” structure, mating with several hens a year.
